Luke Smith – A Games Shaper and Queen’s Baton Relay experience

My journey started a year ago when applying to be a volunteer for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. I have a strong connection to the Gold Coast being born and raised here and i knew I wanted to promote the Coast to the world as a proud local.

It has meant a lot to be able to play my part in the friendly games. In my normal life I work for the Federal Government but have always been a volunteer through Surf Life Saving. As a member of Currumbin Surf Life Saving Club I am a Patrol Captain, an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) trainer and I also race the IRB’s at club, state and National level. It was this commitment to Surf Life Saving that lead to me being invited to take part in the Queens Baton Relay and represent Currumbin SLSC.

The day itself threw up some difficult Surf conditions but it wasn’t enough to overshadow the pride of taking part in a once in a life time opportunity. A flotilla of IRB’s flanked the Baton bearer Trevor Hendy into the shore to mark the final journey to the Opening Ceremony.

Being a volunteer for GC2018 has filled me with pride and allowed me to meet amazing individuals of a similar mindset who are prepared to give up their time. I will walk away with new experiences, friendships and a lifetime of memories.
