Tourism Authority of Thailand promotes alternative destinations and new attraction on Channel Nine
The results of a recent consumer survey indicate that Australians want to find out more about Thailand‘s lesser known attractions – it’s Hidden Gems – so TAT has invited Australian award winning production company, Guru Productions, to produce travelogues about two of the nation’s burgeoning alternative destinations; Phang-Nga in the South and Kanchanaburi in the West.
While one of Phang-Nga‘s landmarks has become world-famous after its appearance in the James Bond films; The Man with the Golden Gun and Tomorrow Never Dies, the region itself is not well-known to Australian travellers.
Just an hour’s drive north of Phuket Airport, visitors can catch a boat from Tab Lamu in Phang Nga, for Mu Ko Similan and Mu Ko Surin Marine National Parks, home to some of the most famous scuba diving sites in the world. Another twenty minutes’ drive further north is the seaside resort area of Khao Lak, a long stretch of sandy beach perfect for those travellers looking for a tranquil beach destination. For eco-travellers, the secluded island of Ko Phra Thong, just an hour’s drive north of Khao Lak is a must, and on Phang Nga‘s eastern coast, travellers can take a sightseeing cruise around Phang-Nga Bay Marine National Park (where both the James Bond movies were filmed).
Sangkhlaburi district, which lies close to the Myanmar border, has much to offer in terms of culture, activities and landscape. It is home to Thailand‘s longest wooden bridge, an ethnic Mon Village and the Old Wat Wang Wiwekaram, nicknamed the Underwater Temple.
