The race is on to be the host for the 2022 Winter Olympics and China is a hot contender, the International Olympic Committee has revealed.
Although they are currently in competition with Sweden, Norway, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and a joint bid from Poland and Slovakia, China is proving to be a strong candidate with the cities of Beijing and Zhangijakou announcing a joint bid to host the games, China Daily reported.
“China is known worldwide as a great organiser of international sports events and we all still remember the brilliant Olympic Games in 2008 in Beijing, so China has a good chance and we are happy to have their bid but its not going to be an easy race,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said.
Sochi, Russia will be hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics with the Russian government planning to promote the Games in an attempt to boost tourism, given the city’s tourist numbers have greatly decreased in recent years.
However, tourism industry insiders fear it may be too late to capitalise on the Games and promote Sochi as a desirable tourist destination, with less than 100 days to go.
